Sacem (Society of Authors, Composers and Music Publishers) has signed three agreements with Facebook, in order to allow for the remuneration of its members whose works will be used and shared on the social network.
They concern the use of the repertoire of Sacem, but also of the American publisher Wixen Music Publishing and Socan, whose catalogues Sacem manages.
These licensing agreements will cover the activities of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and (virtual reality headset) Oculus over more than 180 territories.
For example, their users will be able to directly create and share videos incorporating, as soundtracks, works from the Sacem, Wixen and Socan directories to which they will have access. It’s up to Facebook to pay the rights holder.
it was Major Universal Music who first signed a license agreement with Facebook, valid worldwide and for several years.
Warner Music Group, in turn announced that it had signed a similar agreement with the company created by Mark Zukerberg.
Facebook now hopes to do the same with the third and last major, Sony Music, to better compete with Youtube.
So organizations also had to adapt to new forms of music consumption. They protected their authors with contracts like this.
