YouTube is a video hosting and social media website where users can send, watch, comment, rate, and share streaming videos. It was created in February 2005 by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim, three former PayPal employees, and acquired by Google in October 2006 for $ 1.65 billion. The service is located in San Bruno, California.

In 2009, around 350 million people visited this site each month. On October 28, 2010, all YouTube channels reached one billion subscribers. In 2018, YouTube has more than 1,9 billion connected users every month.

The group most frequently seen in the main channel is VEVO, with just under fifty billion views for all of its videos, followed by UniversalMusicGroup, with just under seven billion views. Today, all new music is on youtube when albums are released.

9 of the 10 most viewed videos on YouTube are music videos.

Since the appearance of channels in place of accounts, YouTube has been promoting the creators of individual content, known as youtubeur. Thanks to this medium, several videographers have acquired notoriety on the platform, and some beyond.
